It’s Seafair Weekend in Seattle, which means there are Blue Angels buzzing overhead as I write this. One of these years, I’m going to insist that we rent a boat and watch them from the lake. The acrobatics are quite thrilling to watch – especially right above you! Also this weekend, a generation of best in class athletes is gathering in Rio for the 2o16 Summer Olympics. Though reports about Rio anger me about Olympic politics, and make me fear for athletes’ safety, I am also thrilled to watch them live out their gold medal dreams. Do you have a favorite sport to watch? For me, swimming is the clear winner. But I’m also a fan of gymnastics and beach volleyball. Though, I’m sure many other sports will grace our screens over the next couple of weeks. I also enjoy monitoring the medal count. It’s pretty terrific to be from a country that’s so well represented across the many events. One of the many things that, despite the rhetoric, reminds me…America is already pretty darn great!
Speaking of swimming…the US Olympic Swim Team pulled off their own version of Carpool Karaoke this week, sans James Cordon. (Somebody’s gonna be pissed!) Swimming superstars Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, and Katie Ledecky are among the swimmers who take turns at the wheel…and mic.
Check out these super cool interactive profiles from the New York Times on Olympic athletes Simone Biles (gymnastics), Derek Drouin (high jump), Ryan Lochte (swimming), and Christian Taylor (triple jump). The series design is just as incredible as the subjects – they all tell truly amazing stories of strength, resilience, science, and innovation. Athletes are unreal.
Over the years, many major designers have gotten into the Olympic outfit game, as is evidenced by Cuba’s national team dressing in head-to-toe Louboutin. While I am sensing a future in “Cuboutin” fashion, the styles are, much like most team uniforms, what I would describe as sporty flight attendant. Check out these more cutting-edge looks from DSquared2, Stella McCartney, and H+M topping Forbes’ list of Most Stylish Uniforms from the Rio Games.
